A roughcaster applies a textured external finish to buildings - the traditional Scottish harling that protects stone and blockwork walls from the weather while giving them a clean, uniform appearance.
Harling is one of Scotland's most common wall finishes and when it cracks, blows or starts to let in damp, getting it patched or replaced promptly prevents more expensive damage to the masonry underneath.
Ask whether they use traditional lime harling or modern cement render - on older stone buildings, lime-based finishes allow the walls to breathe and avoid the moisture problems that cement can cause.

About Johnstone
Johnstone is a town in central Renfrewshire, about three miles west of Paisley, founded as a planned industrial village in 1782 by George Houston of Johnstone Castle.
The town grew rapidly through the 19th century on the back of cotton spinning, engineering and coal mining. The Johnstone area became known for its machine tool and engineering works and the town retains a strong working identity.
Johnstone has a busy high street, a well-used railway station with regular services to Glasgow Central and good access to the surrounding countryside - the Johnstone to Kilbarchan path and the wider cycle network connect the town to neighbouring villages.
The town sits at a transport crossroads, with the A737 running south to Irvine, the A761 heading west to Bridge of Weir and Kilmacolm and the railway providing a fast link eastward through Paisley to Glasgow.

It covers around 270 square kilometres and has a population of roughly 180,000, making it one of the more densely populated council areas outside the four main cities.
Paisley is the largest town and administrative centre - the fifth-largest settlement in Scotland - with a rich industrial heritage built on thread-making, weaving and the iconic Paisley pattern that took the town's name around the world. The medieval Paisley Abbey, founded in 1163, remains one of the finest monastic churches in Scotland and is believed to be the birthplace of the Stewart royal dynasty.

The centre and south-west rise into the Renfrewshire Heights, a belt of rolling farmland and moorland dotted with attractive villages like Lochwinnoch, Kilbarchan, Houston and Bridge of Weir that have a distinctly rural character despite being within easy reach of Glasgow.
Transport links are excellent. Glasgow Airport sits within the council boundary at Abbotsinch, the M8 motorway crosses the area east to west and railway lines connect Paisley, Johnstone and the surrounding towns to Glasgow Central in as little as ten minutes - making Renfrewshire one of the most accessible parts of the Glasgow city region.
