About Lochwinnoch

Lochwinnoch is a village in the south-west corner of Renfrewshire, set in a broad valley beside Castle Semple Loch and Barr Loch on the edge of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park.

The village is a centre for outdoor recreation โ€” Castle Semple Loch offers sailing, kayaking, and fishing, the RSPB Lochwinnoch nature reserve attracts birdwatchers from across Scotland, and the regional park provides miles of walking and cycling routes through the surrounding moorland and hills.

Lochwinnoch has a long history as a weaving village and later a centre for cask and barrel making. The main street retains an attractive mix of 18th- and 19th-century buildings, and the village has a strong community life with an active arts scene, a heritage group, and a popular annual gala.

The village has a railway station on the Glasgow to Ayr line, providing direct services to Glasgow Central, and the A760 connects it to Johnstone and Largs โ€” giving it a combination of rural setting and practical transport links that is hard to match in the west of Scotland.

About Renfrewshire

Renfrewshire coat of arms(opens in new tab)

Renfrewshire is a council area in west-central Scotland, lying immediately to the west and south-west of Glasgow on the southern bank of the River Clyde. It covers around 270 square kilometres and has a population of roughly 180,000, making it one of the more densely populated council areas outside the four main cities.

Paisley is the largest town and administrative centre โ€” the fifth-largest settlement in Scotland โ€” with a rich industrial heritage built on thread-making, weaving, and the iconic Paisley pattern that took the town's name around the world. The medieval Paisley Abbey, founded in 1163, remains one of the finest monastic churches in Scotland and is believed to be the birthplace of the Stewart royal dynasty.

Beyond Paisley, the landscape varies considerably. The northern strip along the Clyde is low-lying and industrialised, taking in Renfrew, Inchinnan, and Erskine. The centre and south-west rise into the Renfrewshire Heights, a belt of rolling farmland and moorland dotted with attractive villages like Lochwinnoch, Kilbarchan, Houston, and Bridge of Weir that have a distinctly rural character despite being within easy reach of Glasgow.

Transport links are excellent. Glasgow Airport sits within the council boundary at Abbotsinch, the M8 motorway crosses the area east to west, and railway lines connect Paisley, Johnstone, and the surrounding towns to Glasgow Central in as little as ten minutes โ€” making Renfrewshire one of the most accessible parts of the Glasgow city region.
