About East Renfrewshire

East Renfrewshire is a compact council area on the southern edge of Glasgow, stretching from the suburban communities of Giffnock and Clarkston southward through Newton Mearns to the rural uplands around Eaglesham and Neilston.

The area consistently ranks among the highest in Scotland for school attainment and quality of life, making it one of the most sought-after places to live in the Glasgow area. Giffnock, Newton Mearns and Clarkston are particularly popular with families drawn to the schools, green spaces and village-style high streets that give the area a distinct character despite its proximity to the city.

Barrhead is the largest town by population and has a more industrial heritage than the leafy eastern suburbs, with a character rooted in textile manufacturing and engineering. Neilston and Eaglesham, further south, are attractive conservation villages surrounded by open countryside and farmland that stretches toward the Renfrewshire Heights.

The economy is largely residential, with many residents commuting to Glasgow for work. Rail services from Giffnock, Clarkston, Newton Mearns, Barrhead and Neilston connect to Glasgow Central, most journeys taking under 20 minutes. The M77 motorway runs through the western side of the area, providing fast road access to the city centre and south toward Ayrshire.

East Renfrewshire combines the convenience of a city-edge location with a strong sense of local community. Its towns and villages have their own shops, parks and social life and the Whitelee Windfarm on the southern boundary โ€” one of the largest onshore windfarms in Europe โ€” offers miles of walking and cycling trails with views across the central belt.
