About Childminders

A childminder provides registered childcare in their own home - looking after babies, toddlers and school-age children in a small, family-style setting.

Unlike nurseries, a childminder offers a home environment with smaller numbers, flexible hours and often a closer relationship with the children in their care - ideal for parents who want something more personal.

In Scotland, all childminders must be registered with the Care Inspectorate and their inspection reports are publicly available - always check these before making your decision.

About Barrhead

Barrhead is the second-largest town in East Renfrewshire, sitting on the Levern Water in the western part of the council area.

The town has a proud industrial heritage in textiles and sanitary ware manufacturing and has seen significant regeneration around its railway station and town centre.

Housing ranges from traditional sandstone tenements and terraces in the older parts of town to modern estates and new-build developments around the regenerated centre.

Barrhead has a full range of amenities including supermarkets, a health centre, a leisure centre and primary and secondary schools.

The ongoing regeneration and mix of older and newer housing stock create regular demand for tradespeople across building, plumbing, electrical and decorating trades.

About East Renfrewshire

East Renfrewshire is a compact council area on the southern edge of Glasgow, stretching from the suburban communities of Giffnock and Clarkston southward through Newton Mearns to the rural uplands around Eaglesham and Neilston.

The area consistently ranks among the highest in Scotland for school attainment and quality of life, making it one of the most sought-after places to live in the Glasgow area. Giffnock, Newton Mearns and Clarkston are particularly popular with families drawn to the schools, green spaces and village-style high streets that give the area a distinct character despite its proximity to the city.

Barrhead is the largest town by population and has a more industrial heritage than the leafy eastern suburbs, with a character rooted in textile manufacturing and engineering. Neilston and Eaglesham, further south, are attractive conservation villages surrounded by open countryside and farmland that stretches toward the Renfrewshire Heights.

The economy is largely residential, with many residents commuting to Glasgow for work. Rail services from Giffnock, Clarkston, Newton Mearns, Barrhead and Neilston connect to Glasgow Central, most journeys taking under 20 minutes. The M77 motorway runs through the western side of the area, providing fast road access to the city centre and south toward Ayrshire.

East Renfrewshire combines the convenience of a city-edge location with a strong sense of local community and genuinely attractive countryside on its doorstep. The Whitelee Windfarm on the southern boundary - one of the largest onshore windfarms in Europe - offers miles of walking and cycling trails with views across the central belt, and the rolling farmland around Eaglesham and Neilston gives the area a rural character that belies how close it is to Glasgow.
