Hillside is a small village on the A937 south of Montrose, sitting between the coastal farmland and the lower slopes of the Angus hills as the landscape begins its transition inland.
The village is primarily residential, with a railway halt on the Dundee to Aberdeen line providing an occasional service and Montrose just a couple of miles away for shops and amenities.
It has a quiet, settled character and the kind of low-key rural identity typical of the smaller settlements along this stretch of the Angus coast.

Transport links include the main east coast rail line serving Arbroath, Carnoustie and Montrose, the A90 dual carriageway connecting Dundee to Aberdeen and a network of rural roads that reach into some of the most scenic and least-visited parts of Highland Scotland.
