Harthill is a village in the far south-east of North Lanarkshire, close to the boundary with West Lothian and sitting on the high plateau between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Like many villages in this area, Harthill grew around the coal and ironstone industries that once dominated the landscape. The pits are long gone, but the open, windswept moorland and farmland that surround the village are a reminder of its upland setting.
