Kirkintilloch is the administrative centre of East Dunbartonshire, a town of around 20,000 people sitting on the Forth and Clyde Canal midway between Glasgow and the Campsie Fells.

The town has ancient roots — it grew up around a Roman fort on the Antonine Wall, and the canal, which runs through its centre, was a major artery of trade and industry from the 18th century onward. The Auld Kirk Museum on the Cowgate tells the story of the town and the surrounding area.

Kirkintilloch was once known as a centre of weaving and light industry, and the town centre retains a compact, traditional character with a good range of local shops and services along the cross and the Cowgate.

Bus services connect Kirkintilloch to Glasgow and the surrounding towns, and while it lacks a railway station, nearby Lenzie provides rail access to Glasgow Queen Street. The Campsie Fells rise to the north, offering hill walking within easy reach.
