Dundee is a compact council area on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, covering Scotland's fourth-largest city and a narrow belt of suburbs stretching east to Broughty Ferry and west to Invergowrie.

The city has undergone one of the most dramatic transformations in urban Scotland, with the opening of V&A Dundee in 2018 anchoring a waterfront regeneration that has reshaped the city's image and economy.

Dundee has a long history of industry - jute, jam and journalism were the famous 'three Js' - and that heritage has given way to strengths in life sciences, digital technology and video games, with the city home to the studios that created Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings.

The University of Dundee and Abertay University give the city a large student population and a research base that punches well above the city's weight, particularly in medical research, art and design.

Despite its city status, Dundee is remarkably compact - most neighbourhoods are within a few miles of the centre and the Tay Road Bridge, the railway station and the A90 connect it quickly to Fife, Perth and Aberdeen.
