About Renfrew
Renfrew is a historic royal burgh on the south bank of the River Clyde, sitting between Paisley to the south and the river to the north, with Glasgow's boundary running close to its eastern edge.
The town gives its name to both Renfrewshire and the historic county, and holds a place in Scottish royal history as the seat from which the Stewart dynasty took its first territorial title โ the Barony of Renfrew is still held by the heir to the throne.
Renfrew has a compact town centre with a mix of local shops and services, and the Braehead shopping and leisure complex sits on its eastern fringe. The Renfrew Ferry, one of the last remaining Clyde passenger ferries, connects the town to Yoker on the north bank.
The Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside project is bringing significant regeneration to the area, including a new bridge across the Clyde, improved flood defences, and new housing and commercial development along the waterfront.

Renfrewshire is a council area in west-central Scotland, lying immediately to the west and south-west of Glasgow on the southern bank of the River Clyde. It covers around 270 square kilometres and has a population of roughly 180,000, making it one of the more densely populated council areas outside the four main cities.
Paisley is the largest town and administrative centre โ the fifth-largest settlement in Scotland โ with a rich industrial heritage built on thread-making, weaving, and the iconic Paisley pattern that took the town's name around the world. The medieval Paisley Abbey, founded in 1163, remains one of the finest monastic churches in Scotland and is believed to be the birthplace of the Stewart royal dynasty.
Beyond Paisley, the landscape varies considerably. The northern strip along the Clyde is low-lying and industrialised, taking in Renfrew, Inchinnan, and Erskine. The centre and south-west rise into the Renfrewshire Heights, a belt of rolling farmland and moorland dotted with attractive villages like Lochwinnoch, Kilbarchan, Houston, and Bridge of Weir that have a distinctly rural character despite being within easy reach of Glasgow.
Transport links are excellent. Glasgow Airport sits within the council boundary at Abbotsinch, the M8 motorway crosses the area east to west, and railway lines connect Paisley, Johnstone, and the surrounding towns to Glasgow Central in as little as ten minutes โ making Renfrewshire one of the most accessible parts of the Glasgow city region.
